Despite the obvious convenience many people still refuse to link their bank card to WeChat due to safety concerns. Those of us who already have set up WeChat pay may also have nagging doubts in our minds about security. Today we ask the question: Exactly how safe is WeChat pay?
WeChat has 5 ways of ensuring the security of their payments system for individual users.
1. Pattern password
Surprisingly few people know that you can chose to set an extra pattern password especially for your WeChat wallet. To set this up:
Me > Wallet > Password Management > Pattern Password

2. Personal Password
To authorize a payment on WeChat pay we must of course enter a personal WeChat 6 digit payment passcode (unless using quick pay). If you happen to forget your passcode go to:
Me > Wallet > Password Management > Forgot Payment password
Resetting your passcode requires confirmation of all the information of the card that you have linked including your name, passport number and phone number.
With regard to this, it’s worth noting that you should never keep personal information such as your passport or bank card numbers on your phone.
3. Account Freezing
Freezing your account is an option if you loose your phone or suspect that someone has gained access to your WeChat account through nefarious means. WeChat accounts can be frozen in 3 different ways.
By phone: WeChat has an emergency account freezing hotline 0755-86010333
By desktop: 110.qq.com is the official WeChat safety center website
By WeChat: Through the WeChat Team account (see below)
Search for 微信团队 (weixintuandui)
Select 冻结账户 from the first menu
4. WeChat Suspicious Behavior Analysis
The most interesting way that WeChat claims to protect users is through behavior analysis. When a user clicks ‘confirm payment’ WeChat pay will compare the transaction to their previous payments behavior and also data on the payment recipient. Based on this information WeChat claims to be able to identify and immediately intercept suspicious transactions.
5. Full Coverage
WeChat payments are also covered in China by PICC insurance company. In the event that payments were made on your account that you did not authorize, it’s completely possible to claim the amount back. Some information on this process:
