It’s very rare for the WeChat team to announce how many messages are running through WeChat but a few hours ago they did just that with the release of an official new data set for the Chinese New Year 2018. Over the Chinese New Year holiday, 6 day period. In total, 229.7 billion messages were sent via WeChat. 2.9 billion posts were shared on WeChat’s ‘Moments’ newsfeed. 17.5 billion minutes of video and audio calls were made.

Post 90s generation users accounted for 42.5% of all messages sent. Post 80s generation 25.9%. Post 70s generation 15.8%. Generation Z (post 00’s): 7.3%

In total, 768 million people participated in sending and receiving red packets. An increase of 10% compared with last year. Midnight at Chinese New Year was the peak sending time.

Guangdong, Jiangsu & Shandong provinces sent and received the most red packets. A young guy from Chongqing sent 2,723 red packets. A man from Nanchang received 3,429 red packets.

During the Chinese New Year holiday period, the number of concurrent WeChat Mini Game players reached a peak at 28 million/hour. The top 5 most popular games were: Jump, Jump, Star Way WeGoing, Happy Landlords Poker, Happy Tank Battle, Everyone Spot The Difference.

WeChat users in total walked 6.43 trillion steps. With a daily average of 10,700 steps.

During the Chinese New Year period, people spent the most in retail, restaurants, and traveling.
